It hasn’t been long since the death of an EY employee due to work pressure caused outrage on social media, and now, an HDFC bank employee seems to have lost her life to work pressure too. Of course there is no official confirmation of the same.
Sadaf Fatima, additional deputy vice-president, HDFC Bank, Lucknow, reportedly fainted and fell off the chair she was sitting on at the company’s cafeteria. On being rushed to a nearby hospital, she was declared dead. Her colleagues reportedly say that work pressure may have taken her life.
As per an ET report, some of her colleagues recall seeing her pop a tablet before she fainted. The exact cause of death will, however, only be known after the post-mortem report arrives. Meanwhile, the incident has again fuelled concerns about organisations in the private sector trying to operate with limited staff, who are overburdened with work and expected to fulfil unreasonable and rigid deadlines.
In the case of Anna Sebastian, the EY employee who died from extreme work pressure and stress, an official probe has been ordered by the Centre. As part of the same, the Labour Department of Maharashtra had looked into the work policies and processes at the Pune office of EY where Sebastian was employed. Investigations revealed that the company had been operating without the proper permit that regulates work hours since 2007. The company had applied for the permit only this year, 17 years after launching operations!
