OpenAI is now steering its efforts toward developing ‘superintelligence’. This move reflects the company’s ambition to push beyond artificial general intelligence (AGI) into creating tools that surpass human capabilities and accelerate innovation.

OpenAI envisions superintelligent tools that could transform industries and expedite scientific breakthroughs. These tools are expected to outperform humans in solving complex problems, potentially fostering unprecedented levels of abundance and prosperity. The company sees this leap as the next logical step in AI evolution.

AGI typically refers to systems capable of handling tasks across various domains with human-level proficiency. However, OpenAI aims for superintelligence—AI systems that could far exceed human expertise in most economically valuable work.

OpenAI interprets AGI as a system capable of generating massive economic value, estimating profits upwards of $100 billion. The introduction of AI-powered agents into the workforce could revolutionise productivity and reshape industries, with some experts predicting these changes could begin as early as this year.

This economic potential underscores the transformative impact of super-intelligent tools, which OpenAI believes could redefine how businesses operate and how humans interact with technology.

While the promise of superintelligence is compelling, it comes with significant risks. OpenAI has acknowledged that managing the transition to a world with super-intelligent systems poses substantial challenges. Ensuring safety and control over these powerful tools remains a critical concern.

Previously, OpenAI highlighted the absence of a definitive solution for controlling rogue super-intelligent AI. Recent organisational changes, including the disbanding of AI safety teams and the departure of safety researchers, have sparked debates about the company’s readiness to address these challenges.

As OpenAI moves forward, the balance between innovation and safety will be pivotal in shaping the superintelligent future it envisions.
