Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, has initiated a round of layoffs, affecting approximately 16 per cent of its global workforce. This workforce reduction is part of a broader organisational restructuring aimed at boosting agility and enhancing product quality.
The decision has impacted more than 280 employees across 90 countries. The company’s headcount has now dropped from 1,777 to 1,495. As the tech industry faces rapid innovation and intense competition, Automattic is re-evaluating its operational structure to maintain long-term viability and profitability.
The company emphasised that breaking down internal silos and streamlining operations are essential steps to address inefficiencies. Automattic is also shifting its strategy to prioritise quality over quantity in its product offerings, aiming to build more cohesive and high-performing teams.
To support affected employees, Automattic has rolled out a comprehensive severance package. This includes financial compensation, extended benefits, job-placement assistance, and the option for employees to retain their company-issued laptops. The support measures are designed to ease the transition for those who have been let go.
The restructuring marks a decisive move by Automattic to align its workforce and resources with its long-term goals. By focusing on sustainable growth and product excellence, the company aims to strengthen its position in the digital publishing and content- management space.
With this change, Automattic seeks to emerge more efficient and better prepared to meet the evolving needs of its global user base.
