Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has launched a nationwide programme to train over 5,000 Certified Obesity Educators, creating a new cadre of healthcare support professionals. The initiative targets nurses, dietitians, diabetes educators and allied health workers, equipping them with skills in risk assessment, patient counselling, lifestyle modification and treatment adherence.
Why is this required? Well, India’s rising obesity burden is not just a health challenge — it is a workforce challenge. With more than 254 million adults living with generalised obesity and 351 million affected by abdominal obesity, the need for trained professionals in prevention and long term care has never been greater.
This initiative will create jobs in a specialised niche where demand is surging. The programme not only expands employment opportunities but also strengthens the healthcare talent pipeline. By formalising certification, it ensures standardised skills and career progression for professionals who often operate on the margins of traditional medical practice.
The initiative also addresses a critical gap: obesity management has historically been under recognised, with patients receiving limited support beyond physician consultations. By embedding trained educators into the system, continuity of care improves, and new employment pathways open up in hospitals, clinics, wellness centres and corporate health programmes.
