Amazon has discontinued the hybrid approach to work. It has asked its employees to work from the office five days a week, starting January 2025. The staff had been allowed to work from home twice in a week till now.
An official memo has been sent to the staff about the return to office rule, by Andy Jassy, CEO, Amazon. The objective is to ensure better collaboration and connectedness amongst employees.
Like many other organisations, the e-commerce giant too is keen to have its employees return to office full time.
Whether all employees are equally keen to do so is not known. In fact, there were some protests held last year when the company suggested discontinuing remote work and embracing the hybrid model.
Jassy reportedly feels that flexibility has adversely affected the culture of Amazon which was once worth taking pride in. In his opinion, the unnecessary layers of bureaucracy that had emerged due to flexible schedules are having a negative effect on the youthful intensity the firm was once known for.
While Jassy reportedly admits that expecting the workforce to return to office five days a week will require adjustments to be made, it is the right way forward to preserve the productivity and inventiveness of the company.
With this move, there will be some reorganisation, but eventually managers will be supervising people. Employees will be allowed to work from home under special circumstances or emergencies, which was how it was in pre-pandemic times.
