Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a one-day paid menstrual leave for its women employees. The policy applies to women working in the parent company but does not extend to its subsidiaries in financial services and technology.
The move will benefit approximately 5,000 women employees, who make up nine per cent of L&T’s 60,000-strong workforce. The announcement was made during an International Women’s Day event. Company officials will soon finalise the implementation details.
L&T’s decision aligns with the growing demands for menstrual leave in corporate India.
The move also comes after controversy surrounding the remarks made earlier by SN Subrahmanyan, chairman, L&T, advocating a 90-hour workweek. His comments drew criticism and reignited debates about workplace expectations and employee well-being.
Menstrual leave policies have gained momentum across India. In August 2024, Odisha became the first state to introduce a one-day menstrual leave for women in both government and private sectors. Karnataka is also considering a law that would grant women six days of paid menstrual leave annually.
Furthermore, several companies in India have already adopted similar policies. Zomato offers 10 days of paid period leave annually, while Swiggy has also implemented menstrual leave, though specific details are yet to be known.
L&T’s decision marks a significant step in addressing workplace inclusivity and supporting the health and well-being of its female workforce.
