With a view to improving flight safety, IndiGo is rolling out Evidence-Based Training (EBT) programmes for its pilots. These programmes are meant to improve efficiency in terms of operations and also faster decision-making.
This is proof that the airline is keen to move from Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) to EBT-compliant technique, moving beyond traditional assessment techniques to performance-based learning. The transition will happen within the next year and a half, as the airline embraces global test methods in aviation training.
While the current CBTA framework is based on creating pilot competencies, EBT makes it more precise using operational evidence to evaluate and improve performance in a more effective way. The EBT model is based on actual operational data, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) with the training modules based on real-world flying conditions.
First comprehensive data will be collected, validated and analysed with the help of global aviation consultants.
Indigo is pumping in capital into modernising its training systems with increased focus on practical performance instead of testing theory. Therefore, pilots will get to experience scenarios based on actual flight data, which will equip them to respond with more efficiency even in the face of challenges.
The idea is to help hone the pilots’ decision-making skills, test their awareness of situations and also team work, all of which contributes to the safety of the pilots themselves and the passengers they fly.
All the training content will be corroborated with proof of performance derived from across operations and then integrated into the lessons.
Presently, IndiGo flies over 2,300 flights a day with a fleet of more than 400 aircraft and a 5,300-strong workforce. In the next five years, the airline reportedly expects the number of pilots to increase significantly.
