A popular Korean bubble tea chain is under fire following an incident involving a manager’s inappropriate instructions to employees. The controversy stems from a message shared by an intern working at a Gong Cha franchise in the Shinsegae Department Store in Daegu.
On 29 December, the same day that South Korea experienced its deadliest aviation disaster with the Jeju Air flight crashing in Bangkok claiming 179 lives, the manager reportedly sent a disturbing message. The message instructed employees to inform him first, rather than their families, in the event of a similar plane crash! He also emphasised not missing work.
The intern posted the message on social media, expressing shock and disappointment at the manager’s lack of empathy and professionalism. The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage among netizens in South Korea. Many criticised the manager for being heartless and insensitive, especially in the wake of a national tragedy.
In response to the backlash, the franchise owner issued a handwritten apology. The statement acknowledged negligence in managing the store and promised to improve staff training and operations. The owner also sought forgiveness from those affected and vowed to restore trust among customers.
The incident has severely damaged the franchise’s reputation, with calls for greater accountability and professionalism within its management. Public anger continues to mount as discussions on workplace ethics and sensitivity dominate social-media platforms.
