Tata Steel to create 2000 jobs in Jharkhand by 2028

Company to invest Rs 10,000 crore in green steel technology and plant expansions

Tata Steel is set to make a Rs 10,000 crore investment in Jharkhand over the next three years, with the goal of creating 2,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2028.

Announced on 20 July, 2026, in Ranchi, the investment forms part of the company’s strategy to raise India’s capacity to 40 MTPA from 27.35 MTPA today. The plan combines scale-up projects with a move to cleaner production methods.

A major portion, Rs 7,000 crore, will go toward HIsarna and easy melting technology. HIsarna is Tata Steel’s proprietary low-emissions iron-making route that skips the need for coke ovens, sintering and pelletising. The process has been in commercial use at the company’s Netherlands plant for 10 years, where it produces 60,000 tonnes per year.

As part of this, Tata Steel will set up a 1 MT pilot plant within the Jamshedpur complex. The unit will tap existing facilities and supply hot metal to the site’s steelmaking shops. Engineering studies for the project have begun.

The remaining funds will support downstream expansion. The Tinplate Division will see Rs 2,600 crore in upgrades, while Rs 1,500 crore is allocated for the Combi Mill. Sarvesh Kumar, chief of corporate communication, Tata Steel, reported that the investments will strengthen both capacity and product mix.

Officials highlighted that HIsarna allows the use of Indian coking coal, reducing import dependence and input costs. It also cuts capital requirements compared to conventional steel plants because it eliminates several upstream facilities.

The overall push is aimed at boosting competitiveness, lowering emissions, and generating employment in Jharkhand as Tata Steel scales for the next decade.
