Multitasking in training leads to firings at EY

The company requires employees to complete 40 educational credits annually

In May 2024, Ernst & Young (EY) held its Ignite Learning Week, offering employees opportunities to upskill through online courses. However, the event took an unexpected turn when some employees were dismissed for “cheating” during the training.

According to a report by The Financial Times, staff members who attempted to attend multiple virtual courses simultaneously were asked to leave. The company offered many courses to employees such as “Conversing with AI, one prompt at a time” and “How strong is your digital brand in the marketplace?” Furthermore, it also requires employees to complete 40 educational credits annually. However, the company found that dozens of individuals were engaging in multitasking.

For many employees, the terminations came as a surprise, as EY is known for its culture of multitasking, with some staff reportedly juggling multiple client calls at once. The use of three monitors per person is common in the firm, reinforcing this work style.

The issue of cheating is particularly sensitive for EY, as it previously faced a $100 million fine from the US Securities and Exchange Commission in 2022. Further revelations were also identified where the company was informed that the staff had cheated on professional exams and educational courses.

EY, which employs nearly 4 lakh people worldwide, joins other major companies such as Meta in cracking down on misuse of company policies and perks. Last week, Meta reportedly dismissed several employees for misusing a company-provided meal voucher.
