Starting this month, that is, August 2025, the The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has mandated that users wishing to generate their Universal Account Numbers (UANs) will have to use the UMANG app to do so. That means UANs can only be created using the user-friendly and simple Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT). This is a more secure process.

The process eliminates the need to contact the employer. Generation of UAN through Aadhar-based face recognition is compulsory for most EPFO users. Exceptions will be made only inspecial cases where the users are international workers or citizens of Bhutan or Nepal. In such cases the employer’s help may be sought for generation of UAN.

The face authentication technology allows retrieval of user information directly from the Aadhaar database. Therefore, there is no longer any need to enter personal details manually.

This technology retrieves the user’s information directly from the Aadhaar database, eliminating the need to manually enter personal details. Not only does it allow users to generate UANs by themselves, but it also ensures the data is accurate and verified. All users need to do is download the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD App, The digital copy of the e-UAN card can also be downloaded and shared with the employer if required.
