eBay shifts strategy, restructures, cuts 9% of jobs

Marketplace giant trims workforce again by about 1000 while betting on luxury goods, re commerce and diversification.

eBay will lay off about 9 per cent of its global workforce, equal to roughly 1,000 jobs, as part of a restructuring aimed at simplifying operations and focusing resources on faster growing areas. The company had 12,300 employees at the end of last year and had already cut 6 per cent, or 800 jobs, in February.

The latest round of reductions was confirmed by eBay and detailed in a memo from CEO Jamie Iannone, reviewed by Reuters.

The layoffs come as eBay seeks to sharpen its competitive edge. The company has differentiated itself from rivals by expanding into authenticated luxury goods, collectibles and refurbished products, attracting enthusiasts willing to pay premium prices. This strategy has helped its shares rise nearly 40 per cent this year, far outpacing the S&P 500’s 12 per cent gain.

eBay has also strengthened its position in the re-commerce market through its $1.4 billion acquisition of fashion resale platform Depop, which broadened its reach among younger consumers. These moves supported a stronger revenue outlook, with third quarter forecasts above Wall Street expectations. The company is scheduled to report its latest earnings next week.

Despite these gains, eBay continues to face external pressures. Demand for consumer electronics remains uneven, and competition in online marketplaces is intense. Earlier this year, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen made an unsolicited $56 billion takeover bid, which eBay rejected as not credible or attractive.

These job cuts highlight how performance reviews and restructuring are being used to align talent with evolving business priorities. As eBay pivots toward luxury, re commerce and new growth areas, it will be challenging to balance efficiency with retaining the skills needed to sustain momentum.
