Shriram General Insurance (SGI) is rewriting the playbook for employee development. Its innovative MyCoach platform isn’t just a learning tool; it’s a catalyst for transformation, fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-functional collaboration. At the heart of MyCoach is the belief that a well-rounded, industry-savvy workforce is the key to organisational success. By offering a comprehensive curriculum that extends beyond technical skills, SGI is empowering employees to become well-rounded professionals. This holistic approach ensures that employees, from entry-level to senior management, gain a deep understanding of the insurance industry, its nuances, and its future trends.

“Our goal is to create a workforce where everyone—from entry-level staff to senior management—speaks the same ‘language’ of insurance,” says Arun Kumar Singh, head, HR, Shriram General Insurance. This shared foundation facilitates smooth cross-departmental communication, contributing to a more collaborative work culture across the organisation.

One of the standout features of MyCoach is its focus on cross-functional learning. By encouraging employees to explore different areas of the business, the platform fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation. This cross-pollination of ideas leads to more creative solutions and better business outcomes.

While many insurers offer training tailored to specific roles, MyCoach delivers a foundational certification that covers insurance history, fundamentals, and emerging trends. This onboarding tool ensures employees across HR, legal, finance, and other departments gain a holistic understanding of the sector.

“Our goal is to create a workforce where everyone—from entry-level staff to senior management—speaks the same ‘language’ of insurance.  This shared foundation facilitates smooth cross-departmental communication, contributing to a more collaborative work culture across the organisation.”

“The platform’s mandatory nature ensures that employees from every function complete the certification, which fosters cross-functional understanding and improves collaboration,” explains Singh. As employees advance, they explore more specialised aspects of insurance and delve deeper into SGI’s products and industry trends, gaining insights that drive more informed decision-making across departments.

A transparent pathway for career growth

MyCoach also plays a crucial role in SGI’s talent management strategy. By providing clear career paths and opportunities for growth, the platform motivates employees to strive for excellence. The transparent assessment system ensures that promotions are based on merit and performance, creating a fair and equitable environment.

Under a transparent, multi-level assessment system, employees with at least three years of tenure undergo evaluations based on performance recommendations, department head reviews, and HR assessments, ensuring that advancement is earned fairly and consistently. Unlike rigid learning and development (L&D) systems, MyCoach operates within SGI’s open-door culture, enabling employees to explore growth options that align with their strengths and interests. “Our internal transfer system enhances engagement and motivation, giving employees the freedom to pursue skills outside their current roles,” says Singh. This approach supports both personal development and organisational flexibility, as employees have opportunities to acquire knowledge and experience in diverse functions.

The MyCoach platform also incentivises employees to deepen their industry knowledge by awarding extra points to those who complete specialised certifications within SGI. This fosters a culture where continuous learning and industry expertise are both valued and rewarded, a feature that contributes to positive retention trends.

Attracting and retaining talent through development opportunities

The MyCoach certification has emerged as a powerful tool in SGI’s talent retention and recruitment arsenal. By providing clear growth paths and recognising learning achievements, MyCoach reinforces employees’ commitment to the company. “For current employees, MyCoach reinforces their commitment to SGI by providing career paths that reward learning, industry-relevant skills, and loyalty through fair promotion processes,” Singh notes. This culture of reward-driven learning cultivates a sense of purpose and loyalty, enhancing SGI’s ability to retain talent and attract new hires.

A culture of continuous learning and cross-functional development

Continuous learning is embedded in SGI’s culture, with employees encouraged to pursue qualifications beyond insurance, such as MBAs or skills certifications in leadership and communication. SGI supports these efforts with salary increments, promotions, and opportunities for increased responsibility, allowing employees to build relevant skills and explore new areas of interest that align with organisational goals. By embracing a cross-functional learning approach, MyCoach encourages employees to understand multiple roles and collaborate across teams, fostering a work environment where ideas can flow freely, and solutions are comprehensive.

In an industry often characterised by departmental silos, MyCoach breaks down barriers, enabling SGI’s teams to approach interdepartmental projects cohesively and deliver value to clients more effectively. By prioritising holistic learning and growth, MyCoach has become a benchmark for SGI’s commitment to a knowledge-driven culture, setting a high standard for talent development in the insurance industry. Beyond merely a learning tool, MyCoach is a cultural cornerstone that underscores SGI’s dedication to cultivating a workforce equipped for sustained success.
