The Jharkhand government has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees to 53 per cent of basic pay, effective from 1 July. This marks a 3 per cent rise from the previous DA of 50 per cent.
Pensioners will also benefit from this hike, with their dearness relief or DR now raised to 53 per cent. The decision, approved during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is set to impact over 3,00,000 government employees and pensioners in the state.
This hike aligns with a broader trend seen across the country, where state governments and the Central government are adjusting DA rates to address rising inflation. Dearness allowance is a component of employees’ basic pay designed to counteract the impact of inflation on living expenses. Typically revised every six months, it is based on the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPIN).
The increase follows the Central government’s recent pattern of biannual DA revisions for employees and pensioners. Earlier this year, the Central government raised DA by four per cent in March, reaching 50 per cent of basic pay. Another three per cent hike followed in October, bringing the total to 53 per cent.
In addition to the Dearness Allowance (DA) hike, the government has revised several associated allowances to further support employees. These include enhancements to the House Rent Allowance (HRA), Tough Location Allowance, and Conveyance Allowance. Special provisions have been made for children of women with disabilities through a dedicated allowance, along with the Children’s Education Allowance.
Employees can also benefit from reimbursements for hotel accommodation and travel within city limits. Additionally, a daily allowance has been introduced for travel using personal or hired vehicles, ensuring comprehensive support for work-related expenses.
The next DA revision is anticipated in March 2025, continuing the established practice of biannual updates to provide financial relief to employees and retirees.
