Karnataka government has unveiled the ‘KSRTC Arogya’ health insurance scheme to provide comprehensive healthcare support for the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) employees. The programme will benefit over 34,000 employees and their families, covering around 1.5 lakh people.
The scheme aims to ensure equitable and cashless medical treatment. It includes a wide range of healthcare services, such as eye and dental care, as well as alternative therapies such as Ayurveda, Unani and homeopathy.
Employees and their dependents will have no cap on inpatient treatment expenses, providing extensive coverage.
To fund the scheme, a monthly deduction of Rs 650 will be made from employees’ salaries, with an annual increment of Rs 50. The programme is supported by a Rs 20 crore corpus fund established by the KSRTC Trust.
This initiative fulfils a long-standing demand from labour unions. Plans are in place to extend similar benefits to employees of other transport corporations, including BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC, within three months.
To implement the scheme effectively, KSRTC has partnered with 275 hospitals and four diagnostic centres across Karnataka. These partnerships ensure that employees and their families can access cashless inpatient and outpatient services.
The launch event also saw the unveiling of the internal magazine Saarige Sampada and the KSRTC Arogya Manual, aimed at creating awareness about the scheme among employees.
The initiative’s impact is set to extend beyond the transport sector. Furthermore, the government announced plans to provide similar cashless medical coverage for employees of Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) under the Energy Department, with a treatment limit of Rs 5 lakh.
