Samsung’s US job cuts amid HQ move

While relocations have been offered, many workers are facing uncertainty

Samsung Electronics has begun cutting jobs in its US consumer electronics operations as part of a plan to shift its American headquarters from New Jersey to Texas. According to documents and sources cited by Reuters, 739 roles in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, have been affected. While many employees have been offered relocation packages, others have been let go.

In addition, about 100 staff in Plano, Texas, including mobile division employees, have lost their jobs. LinkedIn posts reviewed by Reuters show more than 30 senior sales and marketing professionals across New Jersey, Texas and other US locations have also exited in recent weeks.

The layoffs highlight the uneven fortunes within Samsung. Its chip division is booming thanks to AI demand, but consumer electronics — phones, televisions, and appliances — are struggling with rising costs and tough competition from Apple and Chinese brands. Workers worry that more cuts could follow, with possible consolidation of appliance, entertainment and mobile units.

The timing has added to employee frustration. Samsung’s New Jersey staff only moved into new offices last year with much fanfare, and now face relocation or job loss. The company employs about 1,200 people in New Jersey, and many are uncertain about their future.

Samsung says the headquarters move is meant to bring teams together in Texas, where it already has chip factories and a mobile hub, and to align with a growing AI ecosystem. It insists there is no global restructuring underway in consumer products.

For employees, the transition means relocation stress, job insecurity, and career disruption.
