Samsung’s ‘no work no pay’ policy in action for protesting employees

The labour dispute at Samsung Electronics’ manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, has reached its 16th day. Tensions are rising as the company intensifies its warnings to striking employees.

Samsung has reportedly invoked a ‘no work, no pay’ policy and has even threatened layoffs if the strike persists. Over 1,000 workers have been on strike, demanding that the management address a list of 20 grievances.

The strike, which began on 9 September, is being supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The workers’ demands include a wage hike, union recognition and a shift to an eight-hour workday. Despite the workers’ continued protest, some returned to their posts earlier this week after the company issued a stern warning.

Samsung’s notice to employees emphasised that participation in what they referred to as an ‘illegal strike’ would result in withholding of pay for the duration of the protest. The company also emphasised that all issues can be resolved through discussions and it has made several attempts for workers to return to duty peacefully. In addition to the ‘no pay’ policy, workers were reportedly cautioned about possible dismissal, with a warning that failure to report to work within four days could lead to termination proceedings.

The ongoing strike has disrupted the production of key consumer electronics, including televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines. However,

Samsung remains focused on minimising disruption for consumers, especially ahead of the festive season.
Meanwhile, CITU Tamil Nadu Secretary Muthukumar alleged that Samsung had filed a case demanding that protesting workers move 500 metres away from the factory. This demand came despite the fact that the workers were already stationed two kilometres from the plant. The labour dispute continues as both sides remain firm in their positions, with no immediate signs of resolution.
