The Maharashtra Labour Department has asked the Pune office Ernst and Young (EY) to submit all the details sought for the investigation into the death of Anna Sebastian, who lost her life to unreasonable work pressure.

The labour department has sought details of the company’s policies pertaining to employee welfare, overtime work, salary structure and other operational processes. These details have to be submitted within a week’s time.

The official from the labour department also examined the appointment letter of Anna Sebastian, who had worked as an audit and assurance executive at EY, Pune for four months before the unbearable workload and gruelling schedule had taken her life.

Her death is being looked into as an issue of employee welfare and well-being since Sebastian did not really fit the category of ‘labour’.

After obtaining the required data and information, a detailed report will be submitted to the Centre.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment for a detailed report on the matter and findings of the probe. In fact, the NHRC has reportedly set up a a group specifically to look into business and human rights. The aim is to examine laws and rules on work policies and employee welfare so that the health, well-being and human rights of employees can be protected across all organisations.
