Uber has begun cutting jobs in India as part of a broader global restructuring aimed at simplifying its organisation and reducing management layers. Employees familiar with the developments have reportedly revealed that around 200 employees across Uber’s People and Earners organisations are understood to have been affected.
Layoff notifications started reaching employees on Wednesday, 3 March, 2026, with some saying they received little or no advance indication. The final number of employees affected in India was not immediately clear, with further notifications expected as the restructuring progresses.
Among those impacted are engineers in Uber’s People organisation who work on its internal recruitment platform. The platform supports parts of the hiring process, including interview scheduling. Employees said the team itself has not been entirely disbanded, with selected individuals being let go.
The cuts have also affected employees within Uber’s Earners organisation. The unit is responsible for the technology supporting the driver and courier lifecycle, including onboarding, payments and other systems used by earners across Uber’s markets.
While Uber has reportedly confirmed that its India workforce has been impacted, it has not disclosed the number of jobs being eliminated or the specific teams affected. The company said the restructuring is intended to remove organisational layers and help teams move faster. It also said it would support employees affected by the changes.
The India restructuring comes as Uber plans to reduce its global workforce by around 10 per cent, affecting roughly 3,300 employees. The company is also consolidating teams, including its Core Services Engineering and Science organisations, and bringing together separate Delivery operations teams.
As part of the restructuring, Uber is also tightening its workplace model, with fully remote roles expected to account for about 1 per cent of its workforce, while its three-day office attendance policy will be enforced.
The India cuts come only months after Uber announced plans for new campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, together offering about 9,600 seats by the end of 2027. The company has also said it remains committed to expanding its strategic operations in India, particularly to support its mobility business across the Asia-Pacific region.
