Further building on its strong Environment, Sustainable and Governance (ESG) credentials, Hindustan Zinc, the Indian integrated zinc producer, has deployed a collision-avoidance system with the aim of ensuring the safety of its mine workers. The system will be implemented in a phased manner, beginning with the Sindesar Khurd Mine in Rajasthan, which is amongst the world’s top five silver-producing mines. It will subsequently be extended across all underground mines of Hindustan Zinc.

This pilot phase will see the collision-avoidance system being implemented on 30 Low Profile Dump Trucks (LPDTs) – specialised underground vehicles essential for efficient ore handling – providing a comprehensive digital safety solution designed for both surface and underground mining. The system will continuously monitor the environment around vehicles, and detect nearby equipment and personnel, delivering real-time visual and audible alerts to enhance operator awareness and strengthen risk management.

Using state-of-the-art digitalisation by integrating proximity sensors, operator display units and wearable personal tags connected through a centralised platform, this technology enables uninterrupted data capture and analysis, supporting safety audits, regulatory compliance and strategic decision-making. Designed to the highest safety standards, the Collision Avoidance System offers modular scalability and seamless integration with existing machinery. Its multi-layered safety approach includes early warnings, operator advisories and autonomous interventions to proactively mitigate collision risks, optimise operational efficiency and uphold workforce safety to the highest standards.

According to Arun Misra, CEO and whole-time director, Hindustan Zinc, the integration of the “Collision Avoidance System at mines will consolidate our commitment to operational excellence and technological leadership. This initiative will underpin further expansion of intelligent safety solutions across our operations, ensuring safe, smart and sustainable mining.”

The initiative will be executed in two phases. Phase 1 includes system installation, calibration, comprehensive operator training and continuous maintenance on 30 Low Profile Dump Trucks (LPDTs) at Sindesar Khurd Mine. Phase 2 will extend deployment across Hindustan Zinc’s fleet, unifying safety protocols company-wide in Rajasthan’s underground operations.

It is pertinent to mention here that Hindustan Zinc is ranked among the world’s most sustainable companies in the metals and mining sector. With more than five decades of expertise in the metals and mining industry, Hindustan Zinc continues to strengthen its journey toward creating safe, smart and sustainable mining environments.
