Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) has chosen Tarun Garg to play managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO). The appointment comes into effect on 1 January, 2026, once approval of the shareholders is received.
Garg’s association with Hyundai Motor India began in 2019 when he joined as director-sales, marketing and service. Less than six years into this role, he was elevated to chief operating office (COO) in January of 2023. Since October he has been MD & CEO designate.
Having completed a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 1992, Tarun Garg went on to obtain an MBA in Marketing from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, in 1994.
He joined Maruti Suzuki India as deputy manager, logistics, in May of 1994. Over four and a half years into this role, he was elevated to sales planning manager. Another elevation made him regional manager, central region in November of 2001. August of 2005 was witness to Garg being promoted to national sales planning head. Less than two years later, he was promoted yet again to national sales head. In 2016, he was appointed executive vice president Nexa. By the time he moved on from Maruti Suzuki India, he had reached the position of executive director of marketing.
Following his latest appointment as MD & CEO designate, Garg expressed his gratitude on social media, saying he is “deeply honoured to take on this historic role at such a transformative moment in Hyundai’s journey in India”.  He looks forward to the “exciting” road ahead and will work to “ensure we remain a ‘people-first’ organisation, shaping the future of mobility in India with passion and purpose”.  HRKatha wishes him all the best in this endeavour!
