Vedanta taps young professionals to power India’s next-gen industries

On International Youth Day, Vedanta Group underscored how India’s young workforce is reshaping resource-intensive industries with digital skills, data-driven thinking and new-age engineering.

The conglomerate, present across metals, oil & gas, critical minerals, power and technology, said it onboarded 1,500+ young professionals this year through full-time roles and internships from 150+ premier campuses including IITs, IIMs and NITs. The intake achieved 50 per cent gender diversity, and 15 per cent of fresh hires came from the North-East, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and other regions, broadening access across geography and background.

Vedanta Aluminium Metal now has an average employee age of 31, with 65 per cent of its workforce under 35, making it one of India’s youngest industrial employers. This demographic shift coincides with a broader change in sectors traditionally built on deep operational expertise. Metals, mining, energy and power are rapidly adopting AI, automation, advanced manufacturing, data analytics and sustainability practices, creating demand for professionals who blend domain knowledge with digital fluency.

To meet that demand, Vedanta has prioritised hiring in areas such as digital technologies, data science & analytics, structural engineering, mechatronics, sustainability, environment, geology and geosciences. These capabilities are seen as central to future growth in resource exploration, manufacturing, energy transition and critical minerals.

The company’s campus approach extends beyond hiring. In the last season, Vedanta engaged 15,000+ students through leadership dialogues, competitions and career programmes to give them exposure to large-scale industrial operations while identifying talent suited for a tech-enabled workplace. Last year, 93 per cent of new recruits were fresh graduates or early-career professionals.

According to Neha Sharma, chief human resources officer, Vedanta Group, young professionals were not only future talent but also contributors to the transformation taking place today. She observed that with industries becoming more technology-driven, it would be critical to combine domain expertise with digital capabilities and innovation, and emphasised that their focus was on creating an environment where fresh perspectives and institutional experience complemented each other.

Beyond recruitment, Vedanta is strengthening its value proposition for early-career talent. It has benchmarked rewards for Vedanta Leadership Development Programme participants and academic rank holders, and introduced ESOPs and joining bonuses for entry-level roles to attract high-potential candidates into high-growth sectors.

The group’s commitment also runs through its skilling ecosystem. Over the past six years, nearly 20 lakh people have been empowered through vocational training, women-led entrepreneurship, agriculture and farmer programmes, sports-based skill development and youth empowerment initiatives. Internally, structured programmes fast-track young professionals into leadership and technical roles. Externally, community mentorship and digital skilling efforts support youth employability.

Together, these campus and skilling initiatives reflect Vedanta’s broader goal: to build a workforce that combines formal employment, industry-relevant skills and exposure to emerging technologies. As India positions itself as a global manufacturing and technology hub, the infusion of young talent into core industries is expected to bring new capabilities to businesses driving the country’s next phase of growth.

Vedanta Group is one of the world’s leading producers of metals, oil & gas, critical minerals, power and technology.
