The Sultanate of Oman is ramping up efforts to regulate its foreign workforce. As part of the process, nearly 12,000 illegal workers have been apprehended over the past eight months. More than 9,700 of these individuals have already been deported for violating labour laws.
This was done in a bid to enforce strict compliance with Omanisation policies, and the newly-empowered Inspection Unit under the Security and Safety Institution. This unit, with the authority to close down sites that repeatedly violate Omanisation requirements, is actively monitoring and inspecting various professions to ensure adherence to government regulations.
The primary focus is on ensuring that expatriates are kept at bay in certain professions designated for Omanis, encouraging local job seekers to take advantage of opportunities in Omanised roles.
The unit’s enhanced enforcement capabilities are supported by judicial police powers, which bolster the institution’s ability to ensure compliance with labour laws. This is a significant step in strengthening the labour inspection system, ensuring that all parties adhere to the Omanisation rates and regulations.
In addition to enforcement, Oman is also investing in improved labour care facilities with the help of advanced security and technology. Personnel within the inspection unit are undergoing rigorous training to enhance their ability to effectively manage inspection and enforcement tasks.
Oman is committed to safeguarding the rights of Omani workers and promoting fair labour practices across the nation.
