Apple agrees to tentative labour deal with Maryland store union

The staff members at the Towson store had established a recognised union about two years ago, and now they have struck an agreement, becoming the first union to do so

As per a three-year labour deal signed by the workers of an Apple retail store in Towson, Maryland, there will now be average hikes of 10 per cent over the contract period. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organised Retail Employees, which represents about 85 employees, has entered into an agreement with Apple, which includes scheduling improvements and a severance clause, along with a cap on contract workers and a transparent disciplinary process.

This agreement is reportedly the first US labour deal for an Apple store as well as for any US employee of Apple. The store employees had cast their vote for unionization in June of 2022, and to be part of the International Association of Machinists.

The agreement is awaiting confirmation by a vote of the 85 employees of the store, on 6 August 2024, so that it can come into effect.

On 13 May 2024, these employees had voted to go on strike to draw attention to the lack of work-life balance for the employees due to unpredictable schedules. They had also been unhappy about the low wages, which are unable to keep up with the rising cost of living.

In early May, the US Labour Board had ruled that the tech firm did indeed question its employees regarding union activities and also prevented them from placing union flyers in the break room as was alleged back in 2022. It was found that employees—who had placed flyers on a table in the break room within the office at the World Trade Centre store in New York City—had been interrogated about their actions.
