‘Won’t impose RTO’: Google to staff

Googlers have been assured that the company will continue with the hybrid model

Google employees have been assured that no return-to-office (RTO) mandate will be imposed anytime soon. The hybrid model that it has been following will continue as long as productivity is not affected, reports Business Insider.

This clarification has brought relief to Googlers who were worried that Google too would follow in Amazon’s footsteps and expect employees to be in office five days a week. In fact, this was the most commonly asked question by Googlers at the recent monthly townhall, or TGIF, short for Thank God it’s Friday.

During the townhall, Googlers were given the assurance that employees will not be expected to work from the physical office mandatorily for five days a week.

Right now, Googlers are expected to be present in office at least thrice a week, with them being allowed to work from home two days in a week. The system has been accepted and followed by everyone, and has worked out quite well for the organisation.

However, Sundar Pichai, CEO and John Casey, vice president of global compensation and benefits, Google, have reportedly highlighted how important it is to work in-office at least thrice a week, and that productivity cannot be compromised.

Amazon’s return-to-office (RTO) directive has not gone down well with the employees. A recent online survey of more than 2,500 Amazon employees by Blind revealed that 91 per cent of them were not happy about the RTO policy. Only a mere handful of them (only nine per cent) seemed to approve of the five-day in-office policy. A good 73 per cent were already looking for alternatives and preparing to move on.
