36,000 telecom jobs created under PLI scheme

Govt launches India’s first telecom manufacturing zone to boost domestic production

India has taken a major step to strengthen its telecom-manufacturing ecosystem with the launch of its first dedicated Telecom Manufacturing Zone, even as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme drives large-scale job creation in the sector.

According to recent government data, the PLI scheme for telecom and networking products has created 36,000 jobs so far. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to boost domestic manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports, and position India as a competitive player in the global telecom supply chain.

The new manufacturing zone is designed to serve as an integrated hub for telecom equipment makers, component suppliers, MSMEs, startups, and research and development (R&D) institutions. Officials expect the cluster to promote indigenous design, attract both domestic and foreign investment, and accelerate development of next-generation telecom products including 5G and 6G equipment.

The Department of Telecommunications noted that creating such a zone will help build resilient supply chains and support regional industrial growth. By bringing manufacturers, technology companies and research bodies together, the government aims to improve collaboration across the value chain and enhance India’s competitiveness in exports.

The timing aligns with rapid expansion of digital infrastructure across the country. With 5G rollout underway and demand for networking gear rising, local production is expected to play a critical role in meeting both domestic needs and export targets.

Industry stakeholders view the PLI push and the new zone as complementary moves. The incentives have already drawn investments into telecom manufacturing, while the dedicated zone provides the infrastructure and ecosystem needed to scale up.

Government officials added that the focus will also be on skill development to ensure the 36,000 new jobs translate into long-term employment opportunities. MSMEs and start-ups are expected to be key beneficiaries as they plug into larger supply chains.

With this dual approach of policy support and infrastructure, India is signalling its intent to move from being a large consumer of telecom equipment to a global manufacturing and export destination.
