Bank of America is rolling out stricter hybrid work guidelines that will prevent eligible employees from working remotely on consecutive days, the Charlotte-based financial firm confirmed Wednesday.
Under the updated post-COVID policy, staff with hybrid roles will still have three in-office days and two work-from-home days per week. But the two remote days must be separated. Examples include pairing Monday with Wednesday or Tuesday with Friday — not Thursday and Friday or Monday and Tuesday.
The change takes effect companywide in mid-September, after Labour Day, according to a bank spokesperson. It applies to all Bank of America locations, not just the uptown Charlotte headquarters. The bank did not say how many employees would be impacted.
Leadership said the move is designed to balance office occupancy throughout the week. Crowding has been an issue from Tuesday to Thursday, while Mondays and Fridays often see low attendance. The policy also seeks to strengthen teamwork, mentoring, networking and career development through more face-to-face interaction.
The update was shaped by employee feedback, the nature of banking operations, and customer needs, the spokesperson added. Client-facing roles such as branch bankers and traders already work on-site five days a week.
Bank of America first restructured remote work in October 2022, splitting staff into four categories. At that time, hybrid employees could work remotely up to two days weekly, while “flex office” roles had a set monthly WFH allowance.
Other Charlotte banks are tightening rules too. Truist mandated a full five-day return in January. Wells Fargo still allows two remote days for most staff, though senior leaders and customer-facing teams are expected in four to five days.
Bank of America, one of the world’s largest financial institutions, provides banking, wealth management, investment and trading services.
