The ‘Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed by the Karnataka Assembly on 21 March 2025.
The Bill proposes to double the salary of the chief minister and a 108 per cent salary hike for ministers. The Bill has been approved by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and was presented on the last day of the budget session.
That means the chief minister will now earn Rs 1.50 lakh instead of Rs 75,000, while the salary of ministers will go up from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh, which is a 108 per cent increment. The salary of legislators will be doubled from Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000. Additionally, the rental allowance of ministers will also see a 100 per cent increment from Rs 1.20 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh.
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and the Chairman of the Legislative Council will now earn Rs 1.25 lakh instead of Rs Rs 75,000 with allowances being hiked from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. The pension of legislators will also go up from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000. The travelling allowance per year for rail and flight travel has been hiked from Rs 2.50 lakh to Rs 3.50 lakh.
The last revision of salaries happened in 2022. The state government had taken a decision to go for salary revisions once in five years. The increments have drawn criticism because the hike has been passed at a time when the government has been facing a dearth of funds. The additional financial pressure on the state government from these hikes will be about Rs 62 crore.
