    Will TCS actually render 40,000 employees jobless?

    The IT multinational claims that barely 2% of the workforce will be affected by the layoffs

    Protests have been on in Chennai against Tata Consultancy Services’ announcement of 12,000 layoffs last month, that is, July 2025.

    Following the announcement, UNITE (the Union of IT & ITES Employees), staged a protest in Chennai to express their concern at the government choosing to not act or intervene. The layoffs were to impact employees at the middle and senior levels.

    The protestors are demanding action and have labelled the company as greedy and cruel. Media reports say that UNITE members fear that the layoffs can actually affect up to 40,000 employees.

    The Union also feels that the layoff of experienced personnel is a well thought out strategy that will allow TCS to hire freshers at much lower salaries. According to the Union, TCS should actually be upskilling its employees instead of laying them off to increase profitability and save costs. After all, UNITE points out that the company is in no financial crisis that requires job cuts. In fact, it has been doing well in terms of revenue.

    However, TCS denies the allegations maintaining that the layoffs will impact barely two per cent of the workforce, as the company has always claimed.

    Earlier this month, a former employee of TCS reportedly posted on Reddit that he was coerced into putting in his resignation. The post claimed that the employee was barely given 15 minutes to resign and was told that if they failed to resign on their own they would be terminated and let go with no pay and a negative release letter.
