SpiceJet, after narrowly avoiding collapse, has secured Rs 3,000 crore in fresh funding from investors, including mutual funds, as part of a critical recovery plan. The airline is now focusing on settling outstanding employee dues, a key priority following months of financial instability.
In recent years, SpiceJet faced severe financial challenges, exacerbated by the global grounding of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, employees’ dues, including salaries, provident fund (PF) contributions, and tax deductions, were left unpaid for over two years. This led to growing dissatisfaction among the workforce, as well as legal battles with engine and aircraft lessors over repossession of assets.
With the latest funding secured, SpiceJet’s immediate focus is to clear all pending dues to its employees. The airline has committed to paying salaries, PF, and other outstanding amounts by early next month. This move aims to restore confidence among the workforce and ensure operational stability.
In addition to settling employee dues, SpiceJet is also working to improve its on-time performance and bring 30 grounded aircraft back into service. The company is determined to regain momentum, increase flight operations, and position itself as a reliable carrier in the highly competitive aviation sector.
As SpiceJet moves forward, the airline is committed to creating financial buffers for future challenges while also re-engaging with Boeing for the delivery of its previously- ordered aircraft. Clearing employee dues marks a crucial step in the airline’s journey toward recovery and long-term stability.
