    Work stress takes another life

Work pressure has taken its next victim already. Karthikeyan, a 38-year old software engineer associated with a firm in Pallavaram, on the outskirts of Chennai, reportedly electrocuted himself at his home, in Thazhambur, because of stress at work.

His body was discovered by his wife who returned from a trip and found him unconscious and wrapped up in a power cable, which was connected to a junction box.

Karthikeyan had reportedly been working for the firm for about 15 years. Media reports say that he was being treated for depression owing to intense work pressure.

While a case of unnatural death has been registered, investigations are on to identify other reasons for Karthikeyan taking this extreme step.

Last week, the death of an EY employee, Anna Sebastian, who worked in the audit department of the consultancy services firm, revealed what work pressure and stress could do to a healthy youngster who had just started her professional journey.

While the Ministry of Labour has assured that the matter will be investigated, Deloitte, one of the Big 4 consultancy firms has set up a special committee to re-examine its own workplace policies and processes so that employee well-being is prioritised.

Sebastian’s case would not have drawn so much attention if it wasn’t for her grieving mother’s letter addressed to the CY chairman getting leaked and making its way to social media.

The letter put the spotlight on EY’s culture that encouraged people to work extra hours and even on weekends.

Government need to take very strict actions on such companies who are working as uncultured way , and also examine the workflow of the company ,it is very important for this generation to survive the journey of the IT.
