Engineering giant Larsen & Toubro will invest Rs 18,600 crore in Tamil Nadu under a new agreement signed with the state government, bringing 8,200 jobs across three projects.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised on 4 June at the Secretariat. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, along with SN Subrahmanyan, chairman, L&T, Industries Minister S Keerthana, and top officials were present. Officials noted this is the first large industrial MoU since the current administration took charge.
A major portion, Rs15,000 crore, will fund a data centre expansion in Kancheepuram district. The facility will focus on hyperscale and edge AI services, meeting demand for cloud and data storage. Around 500 jobs will be created there.
Additionally, L&T will also put Rs 2,500 crore into a new electronics-manufacturing hub in Coimbatore. The unit will produce electronic systems and generate about 2,000 jobs, adding strength to the state’s electronics base.
The third project is a Rs 1,100 crore upgrade of the Kattupalli shipyard in Tiruvallur district. The expansion aims to boost fabrication and offshore wind infrastructure, with 5,700 new jobs expected.
Chief Minister Vijay reportedly welcomed L&T’s continued investment and offered the state’s full support for future growth plans.
These projects are expected to create direct and indirect work for youth and help drive Tamil Nadu toward its $1.5 trillion economy target by 2036.
