Hinduja Renewables Energy (HREPL) has found a new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) in Deepak Thakur.

Backed by over three decades of experience, Deepak Thakur was most recently co-chair, RE CEO’s Committee, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Before that he served as MD & CEO, Mahindra Susten, for over three years, from 2022 to 2025.

A mechanical engineering graduate, Deepak Thakur is also an alumnus of the Symbiosis International University from where he completed an MBA in 1992.

He began his professional journey with Larsen & Toubro in marketing and sales, in 1992. Four years later, he moved to Mahindra & Mahindra, where he handled business development, diversification and strategy for the group’s Infrastructure Development Sector (IDS) for four years.

In 2004, he joined Thermax as head, corporate strategy and planning. Four years into this role, he was elevated to head, channel-management group. Two years later, he moved to Honeywell Security Group, as director, South Asia.

He was back at Thermax in 2009, as corporate head-solar business. He stayed put at Thermax for six years before joining Energy Solutions Labs, as director, in 2015. Deepak Thakur also took up the role of director at Shanti Instruments.

He played CEO of Rishabh Instruments for two years and was also president of Sifam Tinsley Instrumentation, Atlanta, US, for two years.

From November 2017 to January of 2021, Deepak Thakur was associated with Sterling and Wilson as CEO, hybrid energy and storage business. In between, he played director at Sterling PBES Energy Solutions, from 2019 to 2021. He was also director, GCo Electrical from 2019 to 2021.

February of 2021 saw him being appointed EVP, renewable energy and storage, Reliance Industries. Thakur’s next stop was Mahindra Solarize, as director for over three years, from 2022 to 2025. During this period he was director, Mahindra Teqo too. Additionally, in April of 2022, he took up the role of MD & CEO, Mahindra Susten.
It was during January 2024 to July 2025 that he played co-chair, RE CEO’s Committee, FICCI.

Now, in his latest assignment at Hinduja Renewables Energy, which is a part of the diversified Hinduja Group, he will continue to advocate clean energy, as he steps into the shoes of Sumit Pandey.
Shom Hinduja, chairman, HREPL, is relying on Thakur’s “experience and leadership” to help “build on our aspiration to be a leading player in the renewable domain”.

Given that Thakur played a key role in shaping India’s National Solar Thermal Policy (2009), he will prove to be an asset to HREPL.
