    Strikes sweep South India

From hospitals to stadiums to state-run liquor outlets, South India’s workforce is uniting in protest, expressing growing frustration over stagnant wages, insecure contracts, and unmet promises

South India is witnessing a wave of strikes across multiple sectors, with nurses, sports employees, and liquor store staff demanding better pay, job security, and improved working conditions.

In Kerala, thousands of nurses from private hospitals staged a massive protest march in Thiruvananthapuram under the United Nurses Association. They pressed the government to set a minimum salary of Rs 40,000 and warned of an indefinite strike if their demands are ignored. The march began at Palayam and ended at the Secretariat, followed by a public meeting.

In Hyderabad, employees of the Hyderabad Cricket Association launched an indefinite strike at Uppal stadium. Their demands include overdue overtime payments, conveyance allowances for ground staff, medical reimbursement, and cashless health insurance. Workers also opposed the appointment of an HR consultancy and cautioned that match schedules could be disrupted if their grievances remain unresolved. Many employees highlighted that they had previously gone months without salaries, making survival extremely difficult.

Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the Tasmac staff union, supported by 20 other employee groups, decided to stage an indefinite strike. Their demands focus on regularisation of employment, time-scale wages, and pensions. With around 24,000 employees serving for over two decades, union leaders stressed that repeated government promises have not been fulfilled. They vowed to continue protests until their rights are secured, while also planning to coordinate with other government employee unions.
