The wave of layoffs at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) appears far from over, with a new report indicating significant job cuts at the company’s Pune operations. After announcing earlier this year that more than 12,000 employees would be let go, the organisation is now reported to have terminated 365 employees from its Pune office in just the past few days.
Reportedly, hundreds of employees were asked to leave abruptly, prompting several affected workers to approach the Labour Commissioner. Many of them are seeking reinstatement, and multiple hearings are currently in progress. Employees claim that the dismissals were sudden and the official layoff procedures were not followed. Several also allege that they did not receive fair compensation. Some women employees have gone on record stating they were compelled to resign even while on maternity leave.
The broader industry context has been cited as a cause for the cuts. The global economic slowdown and increasing protectionist policies in Western countries have pushed Indian IT companies into cost-cutting mode.
At a November hearing, the Labour Commissioner summoned TCS’s HR head for clarification. Instead of offering immediate answers, the company requested more time to submit a written response, raising concerns among Pune’s IT workforce.
TCS is at the centre of multiple layoff-related controversies nationwide. Reports continue to surface of employees being removed under distressing circumstances—including termination on the day of joining, forced resignations during medical emergencies, and the firing of high-performing staff facing personal hardships.
With the IT sector already experiencing slowed hiring and reduced stability, the ongoing developments at TCS have intensified uncertainty for thousands of technology professionals across India.
