Coimbatore civic body begins daily meal support for sanitation staff

New lunch initiative aims to support health and efficiency of conservancy workers on field duty

The Coimbatore City Corporation has introduced a daily lunch scheme for its conservancy workers as part of efforts to strengthen worker welfare and civic hygiene.

The programme was launched to ensure that sanitation staff, who work across the city’s wards from early morning, get access to hot and nutritious food during duty hours. Officials said many workers find it difficult to carry meals while moving between locations, and the new arrangement is expected to ease that burden.

As per the plan, meals will be distributed at fixed points and through mobile units placed in different zones. The menu will cover staple items such as rice, sambar, vegetables and other sides designed to meet daily nutritional needs. The corporation said food safety and quality will be regularly monitored.

Speaking at the launch, senior corporation officials highlighted that conservancy workers form the backbone of the city’s cleanliness drive. Supporting them with basic amenities such as meals can improve stamina, reduce fatigue, and help maintain consistency in sanitation work.

The initiative was rolled out following discussions with health and sanitary department teams. The Commissioner and other senior officials visited the sites, spoke with workers, and collected feedback on the rollout.

The civic body noted that this is a pilot phase and will be reviewed in the coming weeks. Depending on response and logistics, coverage may be expanded to reach more staff across all divisions.

Worker associations welcomed the move, calling it a timely step that recognises the role of frontline staff in keeping Coimbatore clean. The corporation added that similar welfare measures will be considered going forward to improve working conditions.
