Google has reportedly decided not to pursue any diversity goals or endeavour to improve diversity in its workforce. Looks like the company has had enough of diversity initiatives and is re-examining its programmes to eliminate what it calls ‘aspirational goals’.
As per a Bloomberg report, the tech major will now focus on being an equal-opportunity employer allowing all members of its workforce to enjoy success and equal opportunities.
This move comes on the heels of the executive order of US President Donald Trump that directed all federal employees working in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) roles to go on paid leave.
Last month, that is, January 2025, an official memo was issued by the Office of Personnel Management directing all federal government agencies and departments to create a plan to eliminate all DEI roles. The memo also ordered them to shut down all social-media accounts and websites related to these offices and departments. A deadline of 31 January had been set for all federal bodies to submit a plan in writing. President Donald Trump has not hidden that fact that he consider DEI efforts “wasteful”.
In a bid to do away with DEI from corporations and the federal workforce, government agencies have already been ordered to identify establishments that are following DEI practices ‘illegally’ and take action against them. Not surprisingly several companies have been relooking at their initiatives to steer clear of any issues with the law.
