Meta to cut one-third of France workforce through voluntary buyouts?

Meta is reportedly planning a major voluntary buyout programme in France, offering attractive exit packages to employees as it reshapes its workforce and increases its focus on artificial intelligence (AI).

According to reports, Meta is considering voluntary departures for about 100 employees at its French subsidiary, which employs around 300 people. The exits would take place through a French collective negotiated termination agreement (RCC), a framework that allows employers and employees to mutually agree on voluntary separations rather than relying on compulsory layoffs.

The company has reportedly been discussing the plan since July, with 5 November set as the deadline for employees to apply for the programme.

To encourage participation, Meta is said to be offering a generous severance package. Employees who choose to leave could receive compensation equal to 2.15 months of salary for every year worked at the company. They may also qualify for up to 10 months of paid career-transition leave, during which they would receive 80 per cent of their gross salary. Additional support measures under consideration include retraining opportunities and assistance for employees who want to start their own businesses.

The move reflects a broader shift across the technology sector as companies review workforce needs and redirect resources toward AI and other emerging technologies. Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to reduce around 10 per cent of its global workforce as part of organisational restructuring and efforts to strengthen its AI capabilities.

The reported French buyout programme suggests Meta is seeking to reduce headcount through voluntary exits rather than mandatory job cuts. For employees, the plan offers a financially attractive way to leave while receiving transition support. For the company, it provides a less disruptive method of restructuring and reallocating investments.
