Atlassian, the team collaboration and productivity software company is expanding in India. It has announced a new research and development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru, which is four times bigger than the existing office in the city.

Clearly—the firm known for Jira, Confluence and Loom—is keen to invest in the region as a strategic R&D hub. It has already grown in strength from 60 to over 2500 employee in India since 2018.

Almost 75 per cent of Atlassian’s India team members are in R&D roles, working in some of its most strategic product-development areas, from enterprise search and commerce to data residency and customer success. India has become a cornerstone for Atlassian’s global growth engine, and has its largest workforce outside of Australia and the US, with more than 2,500 employees.

According to Rajeev Rajan, chief technology officer, Atlassian, “India continues to be one of our most important R&D hubs, and Bengaluru sits at the heart of this growth. This new world-class R&D Centre is more than just a larger space, it’s a symbol of our investment in the future of work, in distributed teamwork, and most importantly, in the exceptional talent we have here in India. The team is truly building cutting-edge solutions for our global market, and we’re thrilled to give them a vibrant space to connect, create, and collaborate.”

The new office space spans over two lakh square feet and can accommodate over a thousand employees across two levels. The centre has 420 ergonomic workstations and 200 agile work points. Equipped with 70 collaboration studios and five intentional team gathering (ITG) rooms seating 250 (2x previous capacity), it also offers a 280-seat double-height café with live kitchen and regional cuisine. Additionally, it has quiet zones, reflection rooms, parent rooms, yoga/multi-use spaces, and recreational terraces. Multipurpose outdoor sports court, Atlassian’s only global location to promote cricket, futsal, badminton and pickleball. There are also over 10,800 live plants for biophilic impact.

The R&D Centre has been designed to support Atlassian’s Team Anywhere policy, a distributed-first approach that empowers employees to work from wherever they are most effective – whether at home, in the office, or elsewhere. The space features flexible workstations, collaborative zones, wellness areas, and cutting-edge technology to support hybrid teams and foster seamless collaboration across time zones.

Avani Prabhakar, chief people officer, Atlassian shares how the “new R&D Centre is a destination for the incredible talent we have in India – designed for how we work today and how we will work tomorrow. Our Team Anywhere approach allows us to attract and retain top talent, regardless of location. We have Atlassians in almost every Indian state.”

Atlassian is trying to scale operations globally, and the Bengaluru expansion is part of the same.
