Air India is tightening its spending as mounting losses, high jet fuel costs and airspace closures weigh heavily on operations. The Tata Group owned airline is embedding cost consciousness and accountability into its organisational culture, making workforce participation central to the turnaround effort.
The company has created a cross functional cost-saving team under its ‘One Air India’ integration plan. This team will review expenses across departments and identify ways to improve efficiency. Employees are expected to actively support the initiative, reinforcing the message that cost control is a shared responsibility.
To strengthen oversight, Air India has revised its approval matrix. From 1 October, all expenditure approvals must pass through the Head of Department, CXO and CEO. This tighter governance framework is designed to ensure discipline in financial decision making.
The airline is also launching an employee award programme, PRABHAV – The Value Creator Award. Staff are invited to submit ideas to reduce costs, optimise contracts, bring outsourced activities in house, improve procurement, cut waste and generate new revenue opportunities. Submissions will be reviewed systematically, and successful ideas will be recognised and rewarded.
External pressures add urgency to these measures. Ongoing airspace closures and the conflict in the Middle East have disrupted operations, while persistently high fuel prices continue to erode margins. These challenges underline the need for collective action across the workforce.
By involving staff directly in efficiency programmes, Air India is signalling that every employee has a role in shaping the company’s resilience and future growth.
