At least 250 freshers have been waiting to be onboarded after having received letters of intent from Wipro eight months ago.
Uncertainty is growing for these fresh engineering graduates who have formal communication from the company that confirms their selection and also gives information about their role and salary breakdown. Some had even received dates of joining and the location they had to report to post completion of the documentation process. Yet, they were not onboarded on the said date.
The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) the union that works to protect the rights of employees in the IT space has filed a complaint to the Ministry of Labour requesting intervention. It has requested the Ministry to ensure that Wipro provides the freshers some clarity.
Interestingly, Wipro had reportedly conveyed its intentions to hire at least 7,500 freshers in the present financial year. Though this number is far less than the about 10,000 that it had earlier expected to hire, the delay in onboarding fresh engineering graduates hired in May is raising concerns about the company’s sense of commitment.
Early this month, Wipro had directed its employees to spend at least six hours in office on the days that they work from office. The IT major has decided to become strict with its hybrid work policy in 2026. Starting January 2026 itself, the company has set a minimum limit to the in-office work hours on the days that employees report to work in the physical office.
Overall hiring has been slow in the IT sector owing to falling demand, globally. Economic uncertainty has only added to the volatility.
