Diwali is set to be joyful for the government employees in many states of India.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made an announcement that has brought cheer to its officers and employees ahead of Diwali. It has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 31,000 as a one-time bonus for thousands of civic workers and teachers across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
All municipal officers and employees as well as teaching and non-teaching staff of private primary, municipal, aided private primary and secondary schools will receive this grant. Lecturers as well as full-time teachers of aided and unaided schools will also benefit from this grant.
It is reported that a special Bhaubij gift ofRs 14,000 each will be given by BMC to certain categories of workers such as community health volunteers (CHVs). Kindergarten teachers and non-teaching staff will get Rs 5,000 each.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, the state government has announced a bonus and ex gratia to the tune of Rs 44.11 crore for 44,081 employees employed in cooperative societies across the state for the year 2024-25. The amount will be disbursed during 2025-26.
In Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has already disbursed Rs 48.7 crore in bonuses to its employees, well ahead of Diwali. This was reportedly the first time that the finance department of MCD eliminated the manual process and brought into effect an online bonus bill generation system for disbursement. As a result, bonuses were automatically credited to the accounts of the employees.
Elsewhere, in Uttar Pradesh, Rs 1,022 crore is being spent to disburse Diwali bonuses to state government staff. The bonus will come to over Rs 6,000 per employee on the basis of emoluments for 30 days.
Eligible state government employees in Rajasthan (at pay level L-12 or with a grade pay of Rs 4,800 or less) will receive an ad hoc payment of up to Rs 6,774 for Diwali.
Class IV employees in Gujarat were also granted an ad-hoc bonus of Rs 7,000 for Diwali.
