Reddit buzz fuels concerns of mass exit by Indian tech workers from the US

The post predicted that many professionals would soon return to their home countries, with the H-1B visa no longer offering the promise it once did

A wave of viral Reddit discussions is shedding light on growing anxiety and uncertainty among Indian tech professionals in the US. Many are reconsidering their American dream amid rising layoffs, visa complications, and the disruptive power of artificial intelligence (AI). As more companies turn to automation, users on Reddit have begun warning of a ‘mass exodus’ of foreign talent from the US, particularly Indian and Chinese workers on H-1B visas.
The conversation exploded after a Reddit post went viral earlier this year, suggesting that the US was becoming increasingly inhospitable for immigrant tech talent. The post predicted that many professionals would soon return to their home countries, with the H-1B visa no longer looking as  promising as it once did.
Why? Well, rejection rates have gone up for F-1 to H-1B transitions. Then there are more layoffs happening among visa holders, and the work visa system on the whole is now being scrutinised more minutely.
Some users highlighted how companies are starting to prioritise local hires amid political and economic pressure.
Many pointed out how many H-1B holders are struggling not just with job security, but with the uncertainty of green card wait times and changing immigration policies. With AI being used instead of the usual coders and testers roles the sense of instability has only grown in recent times.
The Reddit threads also served as a platform for advice. Several users urged others to take a hard look at their options. If permanent residency seems out of reach, many said, relocating back to India—especially with employer support—may be the better move in terms of wisdom and sustainability.
The discussions are proof that no amount of advanced degrees and US job offers can guarantee long-term security for techies, globally.
