Working at Google: The good, the bad, and the real

Work done in previous teams is often not considered for promotions after switching, which can slow career progression in some cases

Working at Google is often seen as a dream job, but a Bengaluru-based software engineer recently shared insights into his three-year journey at the tech giant. He highlighted both the perks and challenges, offering a balanced perspective on life at one of the world’s most coveted workplaces.

The engineer described Google as a company that prioritises work-life balance, providing perks such as free meals, gyms, spas, team trips, and celebrations. These benefits create an environment that feels almost luxurious. Employees also have access to advanced internal tools that outperform those of most companies, making work more efficient and enjoyable. Additionally, the documentation culture ensures smooth transitions between teams or roles.

Collaborating with highly talented colleagues was another highlight. This constant exposure to brilliant minds encourages employees to stay sharp and grow professionally. The impact of the work is massive, reaching millions or even billions of users worldwide. Employees also receive incentives such as extra pay for on-call duties and bonuses for exceptional contributions.

However, the engineer didn’t shy away from pointing out challenges. The multi-layered approval process, designed to minimise risks, can slow down workflows. He also noted limited opportunities for personal growth, as many teams work with pre-existing infrastructure rather than creating new features from scratch. Team switching and promotions posed another hurdle. Work done in previous teams is often not considered for promotions after switching, which can slow career progression in some cases.

The post has sparked widespread discussion online, with some users sharing their views on the pros and cons of working at Google. While many praised the benefits, others pointed out potential drawbacks, such as the difficulty of transitioning to non-Google roles and the complexities around promotion policies.

Since being shared, the post has gained significant attention, amassing over 100,000 views on social media. It offers a candid look at the realities of working at a big tech company, blending unparalleled perks with unique challenges.
