The All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) is planning to join hands with other trade unions of the country to protest against the implementation of the four Labour Codes. The union maintains that these labour codes favour the corporate and do not have the interest of the workers in mind.
With the Centre not reacting to or condemning the call by Narayana Murthy, chairman of Infosys and SN Subrahmanyan, managing director, L&T , to put inlong hours at work, AICCTU feels that the government is not acting in favour of workers and their rights. In fact, AICCTU is prepared for a nationwide strike if the Centre goes ahead with the implementation of the Labour Codes ignoring the protests of the workers.
At the recent 11th ‘Reclaim the Workers’ Rights’ conference held in Delhi, Rajiv Dimri was elected as as national general secretary and V Shankar was chosen to be the national president of the AICCTU.
The conference was witness to workers from across India expression their opinions on the labour codes and speaking up about various issues including labour rights, exploitation of workers by the corporate, the contract system, privatisation, minimum wages, pension rights and so on.
The conference also discussed the restoration of the old pension scheme, and talked about respectable wages, job security, and other topics.
Held at the Talkatora Stadium over three days (from 24 to 26 February), the conference was reportedly the largest gathering of workers in ten years.
