US hiring holds steady, but opps for Indian job seekers may remain limited

Unemployment claims reportedly fell to their lowest level in 57 years.

The US labour market continues to show strength, with unemployment claims reportedly falling to their lowest level in 57 years. This suggests that most employers are holding on to their existing employees and layoffs remain low.

At the same time, worker productivity grew faster than expected in the third quarter. Employees are producing more output without a similar increase in labour costs, easing concerns that wages could fuel inflation. This gives policymakers more confidence that the labour market is not overheating.

There are still more job openings than unemployed workers in the US, indicating continued demand for talent. However, employers appear cautious about adding permanent staff. Much of the hiring announced in October was for temporary and seasonal roles linked to the holiday season rather than long-term positions.

While planned layoffs rose slightly from the previous month, they were significantly lower than a year ago. Hiring announcements, meanwhile, increased sharply, reaching their highest October level since 2009. Yet many companies are choosing short-term hiring over expanding their permanent workforce.

For Indian professionals aspiring to work in the US, the picture appears mixed. The strong labour market is a positive sign because companies are not cutting jobs aggressively and demand for skills remains healthy. However, employers are being selective and cautious about permanent hiring.

The growing focus on productivity, artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and efficiency means US employers are likely to prioritise highly skilled talent, particularly in technology, data, AI, engineering, healthcare, and specialised business roles. Competition for visa-sponsored jobs could remain intense.

While opportunities still exist, Indian candidates may need stronger niche skills, AI readiness, and adaptability to stand out in a market increasingly focused on productivity and future-ready capabilities.
