Googlers asked to return to office or quit?

Remote workers at Google have been ordered to work from their nearest office at least thrice a week

Looks like Google is becoming more and more serious about in-person collaboration and has mandated that all remote workers should work from the physical office at least thrice a week. In fact, Googlers across some divisions have been warned that they may lose their jobs if they do not return to office for a minimum of three days of in-person work. The employees have been told to work from the nearest Google office on a hybrid schedule.

Members of Google’s technical services unit have been told that their relocation expenses will be covered via a one-time payment provided they relocate to within 50 miles of an office.

In October 2024, Google employees had been assured that no return-to-office (RTO) mandate will be imposed anytime soon. During a townhall then, Googlers were given the assurance that employees will not be expected to work from the physical office mandatorily for five days a week.

Now, with three days in-person collaboration being mandated, is Google trying to get back to a five-day in-office work model? There is no official information available yet.

For some time now Google and other organisations in the tech sector have been trying to minimise costs and shift their focus to artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, quite recently it was reported that Google is preparing for another round of job cuts as part of its ongoing global restructuring efforts. This time, the sales, marketing and advertising teams, mainly in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, will reportedly bear the maximum brunt.

While there is no official confirmation of this news, some media reports said that the layoffs may begin soon.
