In a major relief to lakhs of workers across India, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for Universal Account Number (UAN) activation and Aadhaar linking to 30 June, 2025. This extension aims to benefit especially those working in the unorganised sector and on contractual jobs, who were unable to meet the earlier cut-off.
The previous deadline was set for 31 May, 2025.
With the new deadline, more employees now have a chance to access crucial benefits under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme. The scheme provides a life insurance cover of up to Rs 7 lakh to the nominee in case the employee dies during service. However, this benefit is only available if the employee’s UAN is active and linked to Aadhaar.
Activating UAN is the first step to access several services offered by EPFO. These include claiming provident fund (PF), receiving pension benefits under EPS, and availing life insurance. It also ensures that all personal and employment records are properly updated in the EPFO database.
Employees who have not yet activated their UAN, or whose Aadhaar is not linked to it, are encouraged to complete the process as early as possible. This applies to those who have been added to the scheme by their employer but have not activated their account.
The activation process is fully online and simple. Employees can visit the official EPFO member portal and click on the ‘Activate UAN’ link. They need to provide their UAN, name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, and mobile number. After verifying an OTP sent to the mobile, they can set up login credentials. Once activated, services such as checking PF balance, KYC updates, and claim status are available online.
