Undervalued techie quits, client follows, costing company Rs 2.5 Crore

In a story that’s striking a chord with corporate professionals, a software engineer’s quiet exit from his job has led to major consequences for his former employer. The episode, which has gone viral on social media, highlights the growing frustration among employees who feel undervalued despite their hard work and dedication.

The tech professional had spent three years at a mid-sized IT firm. Over time, he absorbed the responsibilities of two departed colleagues, handling critical accounts without complaint. His workload doubled, and client feedback remained consistently positive. However, repeated requests for a salary revision went unanswered. Things took a sharp turn during a conversation with his manager, who dismissed his concerns by stating he was “just a number” and could be replaced instantly.

That exchange pushed him to start looking for new opportunities. He continued managing a key client while quietly applying elsewhere. Within two weeks, he was offered a position in a rival firm. Nit only did that offer come with a 40 per cent salary increase but also better employee benefits.

When he resigned, his manager backtracked, offering to match the salary and calling him “an important asset.” But the employee had already made up his mind.

Just a month into his new role, he learned through old colleagues that the client he managed had terminated their Rs 2.5 crore annual contract with his former company. They had enquired where he had joined and then shifted their business to his new employer.

This unexpected turn of events not only boosted the professional’s career but served as a reminder that recognising and retaining talent is no longer optional but essential.
