Indian Railways and the Indian Army have launched a joint framework to support post-retirement employment for soldiers and Agniveers. The initiative, announced today, is designed to make the shift from military to civilian life smoother by raising awareness of job opportunities in the Railways and creating a support system for retiring personnel.
The plan reflects a shared commitment to giving veterans meaningful second careers. Indian Railways has already built welfare and resettlement into its policy framework. To create opportunities, 10% of Level-2 and above posts and 20 per cent of Level-1 posts are reserved for ex-servicemen. For ex-Agniveers, 5 per cent of Level-2 and above posts and 10 per cent of Level-1 posts are reserved.
In 2024 and 2025, 14,788 posts were set aside for ex-servicemen, including 6,485 Level-1 positions and 8,303 at Level-2 and above. Recruitment is handled through Railway Recruitment Centres and Boards, using competitive exams. To speed up hiring, the Railways has also started recruiting ex-servicemen as Pointsmen on a contract basis until regular processes are completed. Over 5,000 Level-1 posts are currently being processed, with nine divisions signing agreements with Army organisations to fill them.
The framework encourages Army recruiting units to work closely with Railway Divisions to accelerate hiring. Both institutions bring valuable skills—discipline, technical expertise, and leadership—that can strengthen national infrastructure and security coordination. Many soldiers retire young, carrying operational and managerial experience that can be applied to civilian roles.
The partnership also supports logistics and troop movement, with projects such as the Dedicated Freight Corridors and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link already improving deployment capacity. Skill-sharing is advancing through agreements with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
This cooperation formalises long-term collaboration, ensuring veterans and Agniveers remain an integral part of nation-building.
